Wondering What to Wear?
Families and Children
These days things are different and a lot more fun! When I photograph a family I like to let them know that what they wear is very important in the end result. Most importantly, you all should coordinate, but not match exactly. Here’s how I like to do it. First, choose who will be the center of attention in the photo. This is usually the expectant mother, baby, or little girl or boy in the family. Choose a fun outfit for them that may have a bright pattern or many different colors in it, and then pull the coordinating colors from that outfit for everyone else. You all don’t have to wear the same color, as long as they all go together. Tie in one or two accessories for texture like scarves, hats, or fun boots, but again, not for everyone! You don’t want it to look overdone. Adding a little bit of texture is a great way to finish off the look and add some interest, especially if you like black and white photographs.
Babies
When I photograph a newborn or small baby, I like to stay away from full outfits. They are so cute when you are out and about showing off your baby, but for photos, stick with onesies, diaper covers, or nothing at all, to make it look more natural.
High School Seniors
It’s all about you and your style. Wear what makes you comfortable and wear what you love, but there are some important tips to follow. I always advise the girls to wear sleeves in portraits. It’s natural for teenage girls to be a little critical of themselves, no matter who they are. Tank tops are fun to wear and are cute for every day outfits but you should always cover most of your arms for a portrait. You will love the results a lot more if you do. Skirts are also a fine choice, but if you want to wear a skirt, opt for a second outfit with pants as well. Skirts, especially short ones, tend to limit the poses that we can offer. You have the option with me to wear two different outfits, so go for it!
Shoes
Shoes are important! Please don’t put children in sneakers or old flip flops, unless they are cute and have a specific purpose in the photo (sparkly, or converse…). I like to photograph babies with shoes off all the time (unless they are part of a family shot and it won’t make sense) because when they are sitting I’d rather see bare baby feet and toes than the bottom of shoes. It’s much cuter!
I like to have a quick phone consultation before each photo session to discuss outfits in detail and can answer any questions you might come up with!
